While sun exposure is essential for our health and well-being, sun exposure without protection can lead to
undesired pigmentation and premature skin ageing.

It is estimated that up to 90%
of the visible changes commonly attributed to ageing are caused
by the sun1.

Did you know that UV rays from the sun damages your skin every day? Yet, it is necessary for us to get our daily dose of vitamin D!

Living in the tropic region makes it hard to steer clear of the harmful effects of UV rays.

Even when indoors, UV rays can get in and cause the same damage on your skin.

Ultraviolet A or UVA - Commonly associated with Skin Ageing

  • Longer waves (320 - 400 nm) penetrates deep into dermal layers
  • Plays a big role in longterm skin ageing such as wrinkles and freckles
  • May even contribute or initiate the development of skin cancer
  • UVA harms the epidermal cells
  • Affects collagen and elastin that makes up the structure of the dermis, keeping skin resilient

Ultraviolet B or UVB - Typically associated with Sunburn

  • Shorter waves (290 - 320 nm) does not penetrate into skin but affects skin surface
  • Causes skin to burn or become inflamed, leading to redness, soreness and peeling skin
  • UVB rays generate free radicals at all epidermis layer
  • Excessive exposure can produce genetic mutations in the skin’s cellular DNA, which can lead to skin cancer

Signs of Skin Ageing:

Freckles, age spots and spider veins on the face

Thinning and wrinkling of the skin

Loose skin due to collagen breakdown

Signs of Sunburn:

Sun sensitivity, skin redness and peeling

Hot skin, the feeling of heat radiating from skin’s surface

Dehydration

Individuals react differently to the sun. Signs of excessive sun exposure include:

Premature skin ageing

Longer time spent in the sun can make your skin age faster. Signs of premature skin ageing include wrinkled, leathery skin and age spots.

Skin changes

Excessive sun exposure will lead to skin irritation and redness, resulting in freckles and moles.3 Over time, these may develop cancer.

Skin cancer

Most skin cancer is non-melanoma, which is very common and treatable. Melanoma skin cancer is not as common, and is more severe. Skin cancer, especially if left untreated, can spread to other areas of your body.

Eye and retinal damage

UV rays can damage the tissue in your eyes. They can burn your cornea and also blur your vision. Over time, you may develop cataracts which may lead to blindness if left untreated.

UVA and UVB rays have detrimental effects on the skin, which is why we need to be vigilant in sun protection!

Doing so prevents and reduces the harmful effects of UV damage, and also improve your skin tone over time.

UV rays are strongest between 10 am and 4 pm, so do your best to stay indoors then. Do take extra precaution if you must go outdoors!

The easiest way to test if a fabric can protect your skin is to hold it up to the light to see if you can see through it. If you can, then UV rays can also pass through the clothing. A white shirt typically has an SPF of about 7 but drops down to 3 when it is wet.

It is important to also wear other protective gears like hat and sunglasses to shield the face and eyes.

To ensure that you get the full SPF of a sunscreen, you would need to apply about 30 ml for a normal day and double the amount for a long day at the beach.

Sunscreens should also be applied 30 minutes before sun exposure to ensure that the ingredients properly bind to the skin. Reapply every 2 hours daily and immediately after sweating.

The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends an SPF of 15 or higher for every day use; and a water-resistant, broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher for extended outdoor use.

Here is a quick breakdown of what it means:

LAC Taut® Sunshield is a revolutionary beauty supplement that protects you against UVA and UVB rays from inside out .

Powered with 2 key ingredients:

Golden Tomato

A prominent photo-ageing protective ingredient

Golden Tomato is one of nature’s most efficacious whitening ingredientsthat have unique UV-absorbency properties. They are rich in phytoene and phytofluene, which are two colourless carotenoids that absorb UVB and UVA respectively.

Colourless carotenoids lighten and even out skin tone through defending against melanin synthesis, which reduces skin pigmentation production..

Its antioxidant capabilities also protect against
free radicals
, which cause premature ageing. This helps in controlling pigmentation spots and wrinkles from forming.

Additionally, colourless carotenoids do not bleach or stain the skin, allowing you to achieve a lighter and more even skin tone.

Vitamin C

An essential antioxidant
for healthy skin elasticity

Vitamin C is an essential antioxidant and collagen booster that gives you firmer, more plump-looking skin, smoothening out fine lines and wrinkles. Its antioxidant properties help defend against damages caused by free radicals and excessive UV exposure. Too much sun exposure will lead to skin irritation and redness.

Including Vitamin C to the proprietary blend increases the product’s efficacy.

LAC Taut® Sunshield:

With LAC Taut® Sunshield Sunshield, you now don't have to rely solely on sunscreen to shield you from UV rays!

LAC Taut® White – The Perfect Duo

Pair it up with LAC Taut® White for brighter, supple and more youthful-looking skin. LAC Taut® Sunshield protects against UVA and UVB rays and controls pigmentation, while LAC Taut® White lightens existing spots. It evens out your skin tone, leaving you with a more radiant and healthier complexion !

Anyone, no matter their skin tone, is susceptible to skin cancer. People with darker skin produce more of a pigment called melanin that can help protect the skin from UV to a certain extent, but not entirely.

UV rays can get through, even on a cloudy day. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, up to 80 percent of the sun’s UV rays can pass through the clouds. So do not skip sunscreen when it isn't sunny outside!

UV rays can reflect off surfaces like water, sand, snow, pavement, or grass – affecting more than we think they could.

Sand reflects 25% of UV radiation, while water reflects up to 100%. This is why you can get sunburned at the beach!

15 minutes of sun exposure is all we need to reap all the vitamin D from the sun. But we definitely do not want to get dark because of that. This is why sun protection is necessary!

UV damage can happen indoors too. The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation can penetrate windows to reach the skin, accelerating skin ageing even when you are not exposed to sunlight directly.
